it was merry. and cold.

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

I feel like I should begin this post with … merry christmas!  but now I am rethinking this considering Christmas was three whole days ago.  Does it bother anyone else that we prepare, plan, buy, decorate, shop, plan, make lists, etc. for months only to have the day come and go with a swish?  This year christmas day literally slid by.  I was going to recount the horrifying experience yet again but realized I had already talked about it on the blog and probably to everyone who would listen because it was stressful ya’ll!

I’ll just continue with Christmas day where I left off… We did have lunch at mom and dad’s house.  It was delish and good to get out in spite of the crazy high snow and slick streets.  The cars stuck around our neighborhood caused us to almost not make it the whole block to mom’s …  We took turns opening our presents with suprised cheesy faces for pics and then put them back for later opening at the actual party.  We watched mom and dad exchange gifts.  Sweet.

For Christmas dinner we headed to my brother’s house.  He made a fabulous dinner!  I’m not sure what was more stressful, watching Matt carry Izzy across the frozen driveway… or watching mom navigate the ice.  Yikes!   Some fun gifts from the day were funny owl nick & nora pjs given to me by mom… paris hilton perfume for iz… and a key chain for bailey.  You know what that means?  He will be 16 … SIXTEEN … 16!!!!!!!!  in about a month!!!  Crazy huh?  Such a good kid and already a great driver.

Saturday morning began with a delicious and nutritious breakfast of chex mix and pecan pie.  Yum.  Man I have got to hit it hard when the holidays are over.  I feel like a slug.  That’s not a good thing.  I then braved walmart for groceries and that’s all I remember about Saturday!  A big snowy blur.  Matt’s mom, john, jane ellen, ron, and jane ann were all going to come friday… and then saturday… but the roads were just too slick to risk the long trip from Tulsa.

Sunday we drove to Bethany for another Christmas!  We just do kids gifts there… I did come home with some salmon from Portland, and some godiva chocolates which I totally hid immediately (bad thing is I hide stuff like that and then remember it like a year later lol).  Amanda got the coolest estee lauder makeup set that I totally wanted!  Bailey got a cool box that you have to follow directions to open and guess what was inside once he figured it out? $$!  Emelia got a cool ipod that take video.  Hot pink.  She loved it instantly.  Emelia spent the night with her cousin Brook.  Emelia is 11 going on 35.  Brook is 10.  period. Izzy got the sweetest pjs ever and a pottery barn kids pink fluffy blanket that is heavenly.

Mom and I went shopping last night … my favorite after christmas sale items were:  a gold serving tray.  I love that tray!!!; a really cool pretty neat towel; and a snowman flag that was only $4!!! at Marshalls.  I love stuff like that.

Today I picked Emelia up from Yukon… ran errands… I did highlights for Amanda who had been begging asking for a week and trimmed up her ends.  I bought a stupid cute gingerbread house kit thinking the girls would be all over decorating it.  Not the case.  It stayed in the box as Christmas came and went.  Today I couldn’t stand it another second so I ripped it out and decorated it myself.  Sure, the girls stuck a gumdrop here or a candy piece there… but I learned my lesson.  Don’t buy gingerbread house.  They don’t care.  Emelia has a friend over tonight.  Tomorrow I may take the girls to the mall.  or not.  After about 40 minutes in Blockbuster refusing to let them rent a horror movie or anything R  I’m losing my generous sweet spirit. 🙂 …  She did apologize for being “bratty,” and I know her little friend watches all the scary movies but I just don’t like her to put that stuff in her brain!  It’s just ugly.  I’m typing this and in the background the movie Inglorious B.* is playing.  But there are no children (except Princess and she’s a dog child) in the room.  And I am positioning my laptop screen to block the television screen because it is mainly a war bloody type movie.  ICK!

So, I think I’ll post this… close my laptop and do day 12 of my Beth Moore study called, “Jesus.”

Today is the last Monday of 2009.  Sad.

happy christmas.

Well… we’re snowed in.  Seriously.  14.5″ was reportedly a new record at the Will Rogers Airport.  Mom and dad came for dinner last night.  When I took them home I almost didn’t make it back and they only live about a block away!  We had planned to go to Bethany to have Christmas Eve with Matt’s paternal family last night, but that was postponed due to weather.  Today’s plans were also cancelled today.  Instead we are going to mom & dad’s house for lunch and then my brother’s house for dinner.  They are both close enough…  Matt and Bailey are out shoveling snow and distributing ice melt.

I bought a baby doll for Isabelle this year.  She held on to her all day!  So sweet :)…

izzy doll

I went to Sam’s when the blizzard began… stopped at Panera and then realized it wasn’t good weather to be out in.  By the time I got home I was stopping at every stop sign to beat off my windshield wipers and scrape the window just to see the road.  Some miles I could not see at all for about the last half.  It was really scary.  Once the heavy snow stopped it was easier to drive around.  Matt and I went to the store in Choctaw and that wasn’t so bad but people were getting stuck everywhere. I love security cameras.

Merry Christmas!!!!

only three days til christmas.

Can you believe it?

The count down begins…

Yesterday I “almost” had a melt down.  Several things didn’t go quite right… wrong items sent… some cancelled, some delayed.  BUT I kept pressing on and hoping I could keep my happy mood.

Mom and I went to Edmond to try to find some replacements for the above mentioned problems and we arrived just in time for a power outtage.  Which meant the stop lights were down and the stores we had planned to visit were closed until power was restored.  After fighting through traffic for an hour we wound our way to McAllisters and got some sandwiches and yummy sweet tea.  Power was restored.  One present replacement bought. One found, undecided.

I officially have one present left to buy.  One present to mail back.  And one present left to decide on…  But more than anything I’m just enjoying the kids, the lights on the tree, the Christmas music, the parties, even the shopping!  I’m loving Christmas 🙂 …

p.s. Amanda knew my day was a little rough so while I was gone she cleaned out my closet.  I have had that on my to do list for a few weeks… Made my day! free web directory

p.s.s. I am printing a list of things to make for various parties this week… any suggestions?

I think I’m making boomama’s chocolate pie for something and I’m kinda excited about it because I usually don’t make pie.

choc pie

boomama’s chocolate pie.

3/4 cup sugar
3 heaping tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 heaping tablespoons cocoa powder (I like Hershey’s)
2 eggs
2 egg yolks (that is not a typo – that would be 4 egg yolks total, or two days’ worth of your recommended cholesterol intake) 🙂
2 cups milk
2 tablespoons butter
2 teaspoons good vanilla extract

In a medium-sized saucepan (no heat yet), stir together first three ingredients until there are no lumps. I actually run mine through a sifter, but hey, I’m OCD.

In a separate bowl, beat your eggs.

Fold eggs into dry mixture.

Once eggs are fully incorporated, add milk, stir until combined, and then turn on stove to a medium-high heat. You do not want to boil this custard…so be careful you don’t have too much heat going or the pudding will curdle.

Stir or whisk mixture constantly until it starts to thicken – about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in butter and vanilla.

Makes 4-6 servings, which I pour immediately into individual dessert bowls (cools quicker that way).

(Just FYI: for my meringue, I whip four egg whites with 1/4 cup sugar and 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar. When the egg whites make stiff peaks, I spread the meringue on top of a cooled chocolate pie, then put the whole thing in the oven until the peaks start to get some color on them.)

Amanda is home for about four weeks.  Friday we went shopping for her boyfriend’s Christmas gift at the mall.  Isabelle didn’t have school because her teachers weren’t there, so she got to shop with us.  She has had a cold and only lasted about an hour or two before getting pretty sick of shopping.  We ate at Cantina Laredo at Penn and then headed home.  Amanda found the perfect gift for Lorenzo and I got a few things on my list too.

Bailey’s play was Friday night, “Don’t Touch That Dial.”  He did such a great job!  It was hilarious.  Mom, dad, Amanda, Lorenzo, Paula and John all came to watch.  I can’t wait to see the dvd and watch it again.

Saturday Emelia had a birthday party at an indoor swimming pool.  While she was there Amanda and I went grocery shopping.  Fun fun!  It is nice to have a sidekick though :)… Emelia had a game at 6 p.m. … in Luther USA.  I am not a big fan of that gym, but it was good.  Lorenzo’s brother Christian came home for Christmas break and spent the night with Bailey.  Bailey has really missed his good friend Christian!

Sunday morning was the Christmas program at church.  Izzy stayed home coughing and sneezing with Matt.  The others were in the program and Emelia sang a solo.  They all did great.  Mom and dad came to watch.  After a great nap cut a little short with Iz I headed to the ladies dirty santa party at church.  It was tons of fun.  Lots of stealing gifts etc. but I ended up with something cute. yay!  I also found out my good friend Miki had been my secret sister all year.  I had wondered but she kept assuring me she wasn’t.  She was!  And she got me a great gift for reveal… a bracelet from my fav place brighton that , “believe in miracles,” a cool cup from starbucks (she has one and I had mentioned liking it), and some peanut butter fudgy wudgy. . . oh and some gum 🙂 .  It was a great evening! Now to post about santo domingo.

Thought about cleaning out my closet.

Ignored the thoughts about cleaning out my closet.

Wondered if I am forgetting something (re: Christmas).

Peeked at and saw this list…

Written this post.

Ate a handful of the oyster crackers in previous post.

Clicked around on facebook to see what’s new today.

Taught Emelia how to put a belt on with satin white shirt for her concert.

Used the last can of coke in the fridge and will not have another til tomorrow.  sigh.

Planned my calendar on my blackberry for the week.

Cleaned out my purse (even the kitchen faucet) lol.

What have you done today?

life. update.

Lately everytime (about weekly) I log into the blog and think about updating it says not found. I then have to go through tons of hoops to find out that they have reassigned my nameservers on my dns settings so I have to figure out the correct nameservers and reassign them and then wait for it to work. UGH. Not sure what the deal is with that.

I have been cooking tonight… Mom is having a sister party (she has gobs of sisters 🙂 ) … and they are doing a cookie exchange and dirty santa tomorrow.  I made about a thousand no bake cookies, a double batch of spinach dip… and some oyster crackers (saw this on kelly’s corner recipes).  (see recipes below):

oyster crackers

• 1/2 c. butter
• 1 (1 ounce) package dry Ranch-style dressing mix
• 1/2 teaspoon dried dill weed
• 1/4 teaspoon lemon pepper
• 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
• 1 (12 ounce) package oyster crackers
1. Preheat oven to 275 degrees F (135 degrees C).
2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together vegetable oil, ranch-style dressing mix, dill weed, lemon pepper and garlic powder. Pour this spice mixture over the crackers in a medium bowl, and stir until the crackers are coated. Arrange the crackers on a large baking sheet.
Bake in the preheated 275 degrees F (135 degrees C) oven for 15 to 20 minutes.

no bake cookies.

1/2 c butter
1/4 c cocoa
1/2 c milk
dash salt

bring to boil, let boil one minute. turn off heat and add:
1/2 c peanut butter
1/2 c coconut flakes (optional)
1 t vanilla
3 c old fashioned oats

stir and scoop out onto waxed paper to set. (this makes about three dozen small cookies)

spinach dip.
10 oz. chopped frozen spinach
8 oz cream cheese
8 oz sour cream
8 oz mayo
1 package knorr vegetable soup mix
5-6 chopped green onions

rinse and drain spinach well. Mix cc, sc, and mayo until smooth… add soup mix and then onions and spinach. Let set at least an hour in fridge. Great served with crackers or with hawaiian bread…

It’s been a busy but good week.  Monday I was home all day and really decorated the kitchen for Christmas.  It was FUN!

Tuesday I went to help set up for FLO and had lunch with the “group” at a place called bandana reds.  LOL.  The veggie plate wasn’t bad.  FLO went really well. It was PJ night and I had new cute owl pjs to wear.  They were pretty LOUD, but it worked out.  Emelia had bball practice right after FLO so we were rushing out to get  to practice.

Wednesday I went with dad to shop for mom’s Christmas present.  It wasn’t a Wii.  We went to Shawnee Mall and I can’t say what we got but I think she’ll love it!  We ate at Sante Fe Cattle Co. and headed home.  Dad noticed my (NEW) tire was low so we stopped at the tire center to have it checked… they pulled out a huge nail!

Thursday I had a “date” 🙂 with my friends Miki and Debbie.  We went to PF Changs in Edmond.  I had not been there.  It was really good.  They serve the food family style so you can try a little of everyone’s stuff.  I ordered curried coconut veggies with tofu.  It was so good. I brought home more than half and had it for dinner.  I made a big pot of veggie stew for home but ate my leftovers instead.

Today I had my Christmas lunch with Melody at Pepperoni Grill.  It was fun and we ran all over the mall looking for a personal shower gift for her SIL after we ate.  I stopped for supplies for above recipes, got Isabelle and then colored and cut mom’s hair.  I came home and made grilled cheese to go with the leftover soup.  After I got Izzy all fed and ready for bed I got all the cooking done.  Whew.  Long day 🙂

Tomorrow I’m going to the party at moms.  Should be FUN.  Emelia has a ballgame and I am signed up to work the concession stand for the hour after her game.  I also take score for her team.

Sunday the kids all have play practice at church all afternoon.  The three are in the church play and Emelia is singing a solo. . .

looking ahead.

Emelia has a choir concert Monday night.

Bailey is starring in a play Friday night at the high school.

Friday is the last day of school for all the kids for the year!

Amanda will be home for about 4 weeks, minus a chi alpha retreat to Texas.

Isabelle is doing good.  She has had a quiet week.  Her teacher, Melanie, is off work with her surgery recovery until after the holidays and we are missing her.  She really pushes Izzy and expects a lot from her.  Michele is Izzy’s para and takes great care of Iz… Camilla and Barbara are great too!  She is back in C Hall which is nice.  It’s like family in that hall :)…

Here she is in her earmuffs, coat and gloves ready for school.

cold iz

Well… that’s about all the news around here!  What’s up with YOU?

We met with the medical equipment guy to see about a new carseat and bath stuff for Izzy.  I have been hearing rumors of cuts on DMC… hope not.  Insurance companies are cutting more and more.  They used to pay for pediasure which I send to school with Izzy and was told by a nurse who called from ins. co. that it should still be covered but not sure how to get it again.  I do feel blessed to have insurance so I’m not complaining.  I was thinking she still fits in her carseat pretty much but we’ve had it for about 66 months which is probably too long, I know they recall carseats regularly…

What is the deal with the cold weather?  Well, I realize it is almost Winter… but it is so COLD!  Makes me long for orlando vacations.   I would love love love love love to be in Orlando right now, driving to Disney :)… that is the funnest place EVER.  Isabelle loved it there, well seriously we all did.  I hope we all get to go back someday.  Soon!  I think it would be awesome to go at Christmas time, with Disneyworld all decked out for Christmas.  We were there at Halloween and it was really decorated neat!
