I’ve come to realize that doctors are not trained to give hope.  They are not trained to give parents pep talks about not giving up.  It’s “the facts and only the facts,” they like to give.  These facts are based on their years of education and what the medical journals tell them about statistics regarding a illness or injury.  I understand that.  Now.  The day that the middle eastern doctor laid the facts at my feet I did not understand.  I understood the words, just not how this could be my life.  I tried to mentally click my heels repeating “there’s no place like home.”  It didn’t work.  I stood in the sterile private room with Matt and listened with tears welling in my eyes faster than I had the ability to blink them away.  I felt as if I had been riding the tornado ride at the fair for the past few days and finally the bottom had dropped out. But instead of sticking to that wall I fell.  I fell hard.  The comforting crowd of friends and family became too much to face.  I found myself sitting in the hospital chapel, looking for a sign.  Praying for an answer.  The bible on the pew has marked pages so I follow the markings and read in John 14. “If you ask anything in my name you will receive.”  It clicked in my mind and in my heart.  If I believe I will receive.  It seemed so easy.  The God I knew for my entire life was a God that lived in a pretty little box, tied with a beautiful bow.  He was put in a drawer during the week, pulled out for a plea… pulled out on Sundays and most Wednesdays.  My God was not a God that I knew personally and certainly not a God who moved in the current ages.  I learned from an early age that God stopped interacting with humans when the Apostles died.  He sits on His throne in Heaven and looks down watching but not acting.  Letting life take it’s course.  Reading this verse for the first time with my heart I knew that my God was much bigger than the God I had known and I knew that I needed to know Him and believe.As those words grew in my heart the enemy quickly arrived to dispel any hope.  The enemy is a crafty creature who will use the people you trust more than anyone else to discourage you.  This was true in my situation.  I spoke those words aloud to a spiritual mentor. Boldly.  This person quickly explained away why this wasn’t true.  He reminded me why I had never believed this way.  My spirit fell.  But God is faithful and sent an angel in the form of a little faith speaking catholic woman who had walked in my shoes just a year ago.  She spoke words of faith and the final evidence of God’s power was the proof.  Little Clayton came running around the corner asking for a “dr. coke.”  This little guy had been in worse shape than my baby just one short year ago.  Tubes in his crytalized lungs.  Night after night of touch and go.  His mother stood vigil beside his PICU bed for those months.  She never spoke a negative word and never believed that he would be anything less than he was now.  She stood firm in her faith.   Anytime I felt a twinge of fear or doubt I could remember seeing little Clayton, and know that it was possible.  With God.

(I have been thinking about a way to start the book I have always planned to write… what do you think?)…

(thanks for the encouraging words.  I know there are grammatical issues… I actually wrote this page in just a few minutes.  I have written several more pages and I’m excited about getting it started!)

wordy wednesday…

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

Wednesday again.  It was a long weekend.  Matt was off Friday – Monday and then came home for a while Tuesday to eat and check on some things.  It’s hard to get anything done when the “man” is around huh?  It is for me!  I played catch up all day yesterday.  I started the day by making a pot of spaghetti sauce… dad gave me a bunch of red/purple/green/yellow peppers from his garden, so I sauteed some with garlic and onion, added some lean ground beef and tomatoes… I let it cook with Italian spices all day and then made some penne pasta.  It was done enough for amanda to have some for lunch  before heading to her college classes.  Later I mixed it together, covered with freshly grated parm and put it away until dinner.  I popped it in the oven with some garlic bread and dinner was a cinch!

Matt and I have been walking.  A lot!  Well maybe not a lot to most people, but it seems like a lot.  The weather is just great right now for getting outside and enjoying the fresh air.  We walked twice Monday and twice Tuesday.  About an hour each time.  I have to be creative with dinner to have that much time to just walk!  I love how Pinky (the horse) comes to the fence when we walk by to be petted… You know my trash aversion… well last night everyone had their trash rolled out so I spent the time trying to walk as far away from the trash containers as possible.  It is amazing to walk in the dark and look up at all the stars!  I had this song in my head… (if you listen, stay with it until past the halfway mark… and I couldn’t find many videos except church dramas like this one).

We came in and had a devo with the family before bed.  We even snuck in half of the biggest loser before sleeping.

We had a good devo last night and one of the questions was, “What do you want God to help you with?”  The kids all gave different answers…

Amanda said, “homework.”

Bailey said, “getting all my school work finished.” and

Emelia said, “helping a boy at school who is a sixth grader and doesn’t believe in God to believe in God.”

I thought it was good to hear their answers to all the questions and when I woke up early I had things to specifically pray for them because I knew what they were needing from God.  We end our devo (FAT-family altar time) by having a chain prayer.  Emelia always prays that we keep doing our FAT time.  They never protest when we say, “time for devo.”

I have Miki’s cabbage stuff in the crockpot… I hope I remembered her verbal instructions correctly… she said, “cut a head of cabbage into chunks, lay in bottom of pot (I put them in the crockpot); mix lean ground beef with rice and onions (I added salt, pepper and garlic), roll into meatballs and lay on top of cabbage… pour a can of tomato juice and a can of tomato soup on top…  I hope it’s  yummy.  I like cabbage rolls so this sounds like that without all the rolling cabbage…

I’m sleepy today.  Matt woke me up after midnight because I was kicking him… my legs were jerking probably from all the walking?  They do that from time to time and it is so annoying but I was sleeping through it.  He woke me up a few hours later when he had a bad dream to make sure all our guns were locked and secured.  I was irritated to say the least.  I love sleep!

Happy Wednesday! (Today is Kat’s birthday… Karen’s was Monday!)

Today I had lunch with my brother (Mike) and my parents. We were celebrating my dad’s birthday!

(yes. lorenzo came with her.  the studio pictures were of her alone.)

Tonight I made jambalaya for dinner.  It was so good!!!

Matt and I took a walk before and after dinner!  Two walks in one day!

After our second walk we had a family devo.

It’s been a good day!

monday memes

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

Karen from WriteFromKaren has started a new meme, appropriately titled the ‘Monday Morning Meme’. It’s a lot of fun – won’t you join in?

1. What did you do over the weekend? (Saturday and Sunday – be specific, please. Remember, this is a journal about your life, so, tell us about your life. *smile*) …

Saturday I spent most of the day at home, later in the afternoon I went with mom and dad to eat dinner at Qdoba and then mom and I ran to sam’s to pick up dad’s birthday cake and then to Dillards at Penn Square Mall to find some things for amanda to wear in her senior pictures.

Sunday I stayed home with izzy while the rest of the fam went to church, I fixed soup in the crockpot.  Everyone came home and ate lunch and then I ran with amanda and lorenzo to kohl’s to look again for clothes! and then to mom and dad’s for his birthday party (cake and ice cream sundaes) and then came home and fed izzy and then ran back down to cut mike and dad’s hair!  Home for a few minutes and then I went to church.  Matt stayed home with izzy.  There was a guest speaker who has been at FLO twice and she is awesome!  I really enjoyed it.  It ran pretty late and so I came home and got izzy to bed and then went to b

2. Which are scarier to you: ghosts or aliens? Why? Do you believe in either/both? Why or why not?

Probably ghosts.  I used to not believe in them, but after seeing some ghost shows I think maybe they are around… and it’s a little creepy.  I don’t believe in aliens…

3. I can’t live without my cellphone and bible. Now, please tell us why you can’t live without it. Why?

It reminds me of the post about cellphones and bibles… and I should say I can’t live without my bible.  I put cellphone because it links me to my family and friends.  I couldn’t live without my bible either because I would be lost without it.

4. What is the cheesiest movie you ever saw, and secretly enjoyed? Why did you enjoy it so much?

I can’t think of the name, but it had hillary duff and she was on a trip in europe and was a look alike to a pop star … she ended up performing.  It was cheesy!  I don’t know why (to this day) I enjoyed it… maybe because it was so silly.

Join in on the Manic Monday fun!

Pick out the most important item you have in your purse/wallet and tell me why it’s important to you.

My debit card!  Because it pays for everything!

What would you take from your house if you knew it would be flooded tomorrow?

family, laptop, pictures…

If you were stuck in a room for an hour with a chalk board, what would you draw on it?

Garfield.  LOL. I draw garfield all the time. And hearts and flowers and vines… I am a doodler… I also write “annie” in bubble letters and all different ways.

  1.  No bake cookies!  I made a double batch Wednesday. They are so easy and so good.  I think they are probably health food with all that oatmeal in them… and jenna also reminded me what a good source of protein the peanut butter is!

    * 1 3/4 cups white sugar
    * 1/2 cup milk
    * 1/2 cup butter
    * 4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
    * 1/2 cup crunchy peanut butter
    * 3 cups oats (I use the old fashioned 5 minute oats)
    * 1 teaspoon vanilla extract In a medium saucepan, combine sugar, milk, butter, and cocoa. Bring to a boil, and cook for 1 1/2 minutes. Remove from heat, and stir in peanut butter, oats, and vanilla. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto wax paper. Let cool until hardened.
  2. Fall weather!  This may make the top five until winter shows up!
  3. Johnson’s baby bath and baby oil.  I love using my spongie thing to lather up with the baby bath and then put the oil on while I’m still wet in the shower.  Makes my skin feel and smell great!
  4. Yankee candles!  I’m burning fresh linen now which smells nice and clean… soon I’ll start burning all the great fall smelling candles!
  5. My keys!  I lost them so long ago I can’t even remember.  Maybe a year.  Had duplicates made of our house and my car… Last Friday I got an email from CVS headquarters saying they had found my keys and I needed to call and identify them.  I called the 800 no. and couldn’t remember what my keychain was at the time.  I stumbled around until I convinced them they were mine and then they told me they would be mailing them to me from Rhode Island!  They sent them from Choctaw to RI and now back to my mailbox yesterday.  The keychain was from Canada, a souvenier Amanda brought me that has my name on it as well as my blockbuster, cvs, and albertsons key fob things.  I am so glad they are back where they belong!  I just wonder where they’ve been hanging out for the last year!
