know & tell

1. How far in advance do you start getting ready for back-to-school (whether for your own kids, or for yourself when you were in school)?

I usually start picking up school supplies when the main stores like Target or Walmart have them out.  You know, when boxes of crayons are five for $1…. I grab at least 10.  Which means I have stacks of crayons… Oh well.  I guess I could take up coloring as a hobby.  When it’s time to actually go back to school we go shopping to fill in the gaps.

2. Do you have any picky eaters who need special considerations for lunches? What does a typical bagged lunch look like in your house?

Amanda eats at home, after her morning at high school and before heading to her college classes, Bailey takes cash and being the pickiest person in our household I’m afraid a lot of days he buys chips…  I buy things for him to take but he doesn’t feel like it’s cool to take a lunch.  Emelia loves everything and loves the cafeteria.  So, she just eats at school.

3. What supply items do you skimp on and what are you willing to shell out the big bucks for?

We probably spend the most on backpacks… I pick up the other things when they are on sale.

4. Do you get your kids up, or do they get up on their own? Any snooze-hitters that have trouble waking up? How about the opposite, any kids that are up at the crack of dawn?

They have alarm clocks… Matt is up before I am and makes sure they are up.  Bailey’s bus comes a full hour before Emelia’s bus… Izzy usually wakes up when I do.

5. Any cafeteria horror stories? Is school food as bad as they say?

You know how I hate fruit… well it was revealed to me in sixth grade that they smashed bananas to put in the chocolate sheet cake to meet nutrition requirements… chocolate cake has never been the same for me 🙁

6. How important is it to you to make sure your kids have the latest styles and trendiest accessories?

Not that important.  I like them to look nice and cute… but they all have their own styles!  I do enjoy dressing Izzy in cute gymboree outfits.

7. Remember the movie Kindergarten Cop? If Arnold Schwarzenegger was your child’s new kindergarten teacher, how would you feel?

I think I’d be okay with it… I would probably question why he gave up his position to come teach the little kids, but we’d adjust 🙂

1. When I’m sick I’m last to admit it and pray that it goes away fast.

2. When I take a walk, I think about all the things I should be doing.

3. Money can’t buy happiness but it can buy the things needed.

4. Cotton makes me comfortable and leather makes me think of shoes and car seats…

5. The strangest person/character I’ve had lewd thoughts about was __________. Lewd?  Lewd is defined as inciting to lust or lechery; lascivious… so, I can’t say that I’ve had any of those thoughts about anyone or anything strange.

6. My favorite color these days is black or white not to be confused with black & white… because they are classic colors and I like the way they look.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to staying home, tomorrow my plans include grilling and swimming and Sunday, I want to go to church and enjoy a long nap!

Hand Delivered Bouquets
by Max Lucado

Through Christ, God has accepted you. Think about what this means. You cannot keep people from rejecting you. But you can keep rejections from enraging you.

Rejections are like speed bumps on the road. They come with the journey. You’re going to get cut, dissed, dropped, and kicked around. You cannot keep people from rejecting you. But you can keep rejections from enraging you. How? By letting his acceptance compensate for their rejection.

Think of it this way. Suppose you dwell in a high-rise apartment. On the window sill of your room is a solitary daisy. This morning you picked the daisy and pinned it on your lapel. Since you have only one plant, this is a big event and a special daisy.

But as soon as you’re out the door, people start picking petals off your daisy. Someone snags your subway seat. Petal picked. You’re blamed for the bad report of a co-worker. Three petals. The promotion is given to someone with less experience but ‘USC water polo’ looks. More petals. By the end of the day, you’re down to one. Woe be to the soul who dares to draw near it. You’re only one petal-snatching away from a blowup.

What if the scenario was altered slightly? Let’s add one character. The kind man in the apartment next door runs a flower shop on the corner. Every night on the way home he stops at your place with a fresh, undeserved, yet irresistible bouquet. These are not leftover flowers. They are top-of-the-line arrangements. You don’t know why he thinks so highly of you, but you aren’t complaining. Because of him, your apartment has a sweet fragrance, and your step has a happy bounce. Let someone mess with your flower, and you’ve got a basketful to replace it!

The difference is huge. And the interpretation is obvious.

God will load your world with flowers. He hand-delivers a bouquet to your door every day. Open it! Take them! Then, when rejections come, you won’t be left short-petaled.

God can help you get rid of your anger. He made galaxies no one has ever seen and dug canyons we have yet to find. “The LORD … heals all your diseases” (Ps. 103:2–3 NIV). Do you think among those diseases might be the affliction of anger?

Do you think God could heal your angry heart?

Do you want him to? This is not a trick question. He asks the same question of you that he asked of the invalid: “Do you want to be well?” (John 5:6). Not everyone does. You may be addicted to anger. You may be a rage junkie. Anger may be part of your identity. But if you want him to, he can change your identity. Do you want him to do so?

Do you have a better option? Like moving to a rejection-free zone? If so, enjoy your life on your desert island.

Take the flowers. Receive from Him so you can love or at least put up with others.

I got this email just a little while ago and thought it would be perfect to share for a faith lift this Friday morning… thanks to Betty for sending me uplifting emails… Sheryl is the host of faith lift fridays!  She is a returning college student so she’s busier than usual, stop by and say hello and cheer her on if you have a chance.

Food 4 Thought Friday

If you were given one extra hour everyday – how would you use that time?
I would sleep an extra hour!

What is your favorite season and why?
I love Fall because it’s a refreshing break from the heat of Summer… and the colors of leaves changing colors is so pretty… but then I love Spring because it’s so nice to see things turn green and bloom after dying a Winter’s death.

Are you a tight squeezer, a delicate hugger, a back patter, a hand shaker, or a hands off completely person?
Probably delicate hugger.

Midnight Snack
Have you ever gone skinny dipping? If so where?
sure… in water…duh!

Recipe for this Week (instead of your recipe for life – what is it for just this week?)
Trust God… get as much sleep as possible… don’t be afraid to say “I’m Sorry!”… eat as little as possible… and trust God.

To play along go here ~ haha!

13 thursday… things I need to do today!

Friday, August 29th, 2008
  1. Go to Sam’s!  My list so far:  dishwashing liquid (love the huge bottles that last for weeks), baby spinach, box of personal pizzas (for bailey), kashi cereal (for matt).
  2. Run by credit union.
  3. Stop at Kohl’s and return a pair of pants I bought for Emelia that didn’t fit.
  4. Go to the beauty supply and buy bleach, developer, some colors, and more foil… and a few combs since Antoinette (Lorenzo’s sister) melted two of mine straightening her hair! Oh! and the biolage stuff Niecie asked me to get!
  5. Run in Rue 21. Just for a sec.
  6. Stop by Ulta and buy the makeup case with the coupon and put away for Christmas for Emelia (amanda bought one herselft this weekend and Emelia loved it.)
  7. Return Mendy’s call.  I haven’t talked to her in forever!
  8. Climb in the attic and get the Fall boxes down because the door wreath I want to put up is in one of those boxes!
  9. Sort through the lavendar totes and get rid of clothes that I never used and Izzy has outgrown (mostly little jeans she never wore).
  10. Use emptied tote to pack up some things in a box in the pantry and add to holiday section of attic.
  11. Find a place to put the pasta maker I just got… anyone want it?  Really.
  12. Do CADs!  I have a stack to finish and I’m not “into” it.  I have to pick up 35 more tomorrow!  YIKES.
  13. Finish this post so I can get started (gotta get izzy dressed and ready for school!)…

Happy Thursday!
