boating education

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

Arizona Boating can be very dangerous. Every Year in Arizona Alcohol is directly related to fatal boating accidents. 50% of all fatal boating accidents in Arizona were alcohol related in 2007 and 1/3 of all fatal boating accidents nationwide are alcohol related.
Read about Boating Education Online.

In 2007 Arizona watercraft law enforcement agencies arrested over 350 people who were operating watercraft under the influence (OUI) of alcohol.

Operating a boat while impaired is just as dangerous and just as illegal as drinking while driving a car. The legal limit for blood alcohol is .08 in both cases. The penalties are similar, too; like driving under the influence, Boating Operating Under the Influence is a Class One misdemeanor. A sober operator should be designated.

However, unlike driving a car, boating safety education is not required to operate a boat in the state of Arizona. Educated boaters are 70 percent less likely to be involved in a boating accident. Classes are offered in Arizona statewide, or can be taken online at www.azgfd.gov/boating. In addition to learning about the effects of alcohol, a boating safety education course covers other need to know boating topics such as carbon monoxide poisoning, life jacket wear, required safety equipment, rules of navigation, and other boating safety laws and responsibilities.

thursday 13 ~ last day of school

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

Thirteen thoughts about the last day of school…

1.  This is the last day Amanda will be a junior, Bailey will be an eighth grader, Emelia a fourth grader, Izzy in pre-k.

2.  Starting tomorrow the morning rush will be a memory.

3.  I’m thinking “chore chart!”

4.  Lots to go and do… msnbc predicts gas will be as high as $10 per gallon.  Maybe lots to do at home?

5.  Summer school on wednesdays for Iz.  Starting June 11.

6.  Feels like a beginning, makes me want to do all kinds of things like paint, clean, etc.

7.  I love Summer, but by August I’ll love school again!

8.  Three months to keep four kids entertained… including two teens.

9.  Amanda’s boyfriend’s family is moving closer this weekend.  Instead of 20 miles away they will be about 5 miles away from us.

10.  Bailey broke up with his girlfriend “chloe” yesterday.

11.  Emelia has been fussing with friends, I think 10 years old is the time for that!  I’m glad they will now all have a break from each other and hope we can work on our attitudes during this break.

12.  Izzy’s bff from pre-k was supposed to go to a different school in the fall for kindergarten, but because of Iz her mom is going to continue bringing her to CE.  She thinks she is in charge of Izzy.  She’s cute.

13.  I’ll miss Izzy’s teachers and therapists most probably, they are people I visit with everyday when I take and pick up Izzy from school.  They are wonderful people.  All of them.

tuesday

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

This morning I met with Camilla, Izzy’s P.T. at school, to look at a lightweight stroller that a rep brought in for another child in the school. Because Camilla knew that Izzy is outgrowing her lightweight stroller and that her newest chair is too heavy to get in and out of the car she invited me to come and see this stroller. I think it is a good stroller and hope that we can get it for Isabelle.

From there I went to Emelia’s school for her award’s assembly. I walked in the school through the gym where the awards are usually given out. They were finishing up kindergarten graduation. My niece was there with her son who was graduating from kindergarten along with other familiar faces. I found Emelia’s class in the media center just beginning to receive awards. When her class stood at the end of the ceremony she quickly found me and looked content that I was there. I am not nearly as involved in her school life as I was with Amanda and Bailey. I was always the home room mom, always there. With Isabelle I just am not. there. But I do try to make it for special things like this.

As I was running errands this afternoon after dropping Izzy off at school I kept thinking about the kindergarten graduation. I couldn’t help but feel sad, knowing that had things been different, Izzy would be there graduating from kindergarten. Instead I was investigating stroller options. I mentioned that the four year mark came and went last week and really those dates don’t affect me that much. It is more the things like today that are hard to shake off. Little things can also be difficult like seeing a mother with a little girl about that age. Seeing what she should be. What she would be.

Again I swallow hard and keep going. Keeping my faith. Knowing it will all work out. Trusting God.
